I like little patches of different-from-their-surroundings; usually they're little patches of quiet besides busy roads, little patches of growth amongst the built, little patches of enclosure besides wide-open roads and little patches of greenish fluorescent lighting amongst endless rows of sodium. They seem even more isolated at night as the sky is closed and the space-around-the-corner isn't connected over the top of the buildings. If or when I have to walk home along the streets when I'd rather be walking along a nice quiet cycle path or off-road-walkway I try and go past these and walk through them or even just glance into them for the relief from the constant sound of cars steaming past.
