"The most dangerous woman in Britain" *

As a member of Liberty, I was invited to a special event to celebrate Liberty's 80 years of civil & human rights campaigning. The event was held in the beautiful crypt of St. Martin-in-the-Field's church near Trafalgar Square. "The most dangerous woman in Britain", Liberty's Director, Shami Chakrabarti gave an eloquent and passionate speech about why we should all care about protecting civil liberties and promoting human rights and how important membership of Liberty is to the organisation. Apart from the financial contribution members make, the more members the organisation has, the harder it is for government and organisations to ignore Liberty's arguments and campaigns.

The exhibition charts the history of Liberty (previously the NCCL) over the last 80 years, which began with the hunger marches in 1934.

In 2011 Liberty used this soup can as part of a successful campaign to prevent Westminster City Council implementing a byelaw which would have made it a crime to give out a free cup of soup to homeless people in Victoria. This soup can was delivered to councillors, containing letters urging them to drop the plans.
