wood for the trees
Spent an hour this evening staring at people's legs. It was Parents Evening at my kids' school. All the teachers were squeezed in the hall, and so were all the parents. There were a couple of rows of chairs out, and I was lucky enough to get one, but it was quite stressful sitting there, blinded by a forest of legs, straining to hear my name being called above the hubbub.
Still, it turns out the kids are doing all right. In other words they're meeting the targets the school has set for them. The scientist in me likes to be given tick-sheets and to be told that my kids are working towards completing them. The mother in me just wants my babies to give things their best shot and to enjoy themselves while doing it.
