'Abandoned Berlin' #2
Today Marloes, Henrietta and I went on another abandoned adventure and this time Laura, (who I met at the Erasmus party mentioned here), came too!
It was a bitterly cold afternoon complete with a light dusting of snow, as we (the four intrepid explorers) made our way to the abandoned Children's hospital. Inside it was pretty creepy, a huge complex of buildings derelict and run down - although not beyond repair. It makes you wonder why nothing has been done with it. It was very easy to just walk straight in off the street, and weird to think that it sits, broken and forgotten, in an average neighborhood with people milling about as normal.
There were no signs of life within though, only a stale smell (of what, I couldn't quite determine) as we walked down the vast corridors and the occasional drip of water, or creak of a door. Some of the graffiti there was very impressive! Urban-art-gallery-worthy I'd say. I imagine the peeling walls have seen their fair share of secret parties, hosted by Berlin's most rebellious. There were still remnants of signage, door labels and original wall illustrations that pointed specifically towards it's past inhabitants; sick children. I think we all left feeling reflective, a bit freaked out, and in need of a hot beverage to warm our fingers, toes, and souls.
We headed to a candle lit cafe/bar near Warschauerstr. and enjoyed frothy hot choclate with whipped cream. The music playing whilst we sat and chatted was divine. Henrietta and I both agreed that it was as if we'd given the owner access to our Spotify/iTunes accounts. Bon Iver, William Fitzsimmons and Of Monsters and Men to name a few beauts.
Then we all headed our separate ways, and en route home I treated myself to some salt & vinegar pringles (bliss), despite the imported price!
