Croquet on the lawn

Sunny afternoon so we went to Crathes Castle for a walk around the gardens and grounds. People were playing croquet on the lawn - we watched for a while but didn't really manage to work out what was going on.

It looks a very relaxing game - but I believe that experienced players can be pretty ruthless in knocking their opponents out of position.
