Dorothy's a Singer

...operator. She has been making a fine job of turning what's left of our ruined tent into waterproof bags for our camping gear using our much loved Singer sewing machine (manufactured in June 1924 in Clydebank, Scotland). It has always been passed on to an appreciative family member when a new-fangled electric one took its place (a replacement which certainly wouldn't have lasted this long). It's slow but immensely strong, very accurate and beautiful. Its little bobbin winder alone is a joy of mechanical design and engineering.

I told Dorothy she was a very clever bag lady but she didn't take the compliment too well.
