Cantina

Headed out to Morningside for a rummage in the charity shops and some photos of Edinburgh's Wild West, Springvalley Gardens. The Cantina doors are actually the emergency exit of Morningside Library.

Then we went to see Hanna at Cineworld. A strange film, like Leon, with a helping of The Road, Kick Ass and Tarantino. It's a coming of age story really...a teenager trying to work out her place in the world. But it's quite cleverly set in a context of spies, subterfuge and eugenics.

Saoirse Ronan (of Lovely Bones fame) gives a brilliant, sublime performance in the title role. At various points she could be anywhere between 13 and 18. She is supposed to be multilingual, raised in the Nordic woods to a be a hunter and assassin. Her backstory is German, and the 17 year old Ronan pulls off a totally believable german accent. a Her character is incredibly violent, that being how she has been trained. This makes the showing of vulnerability more interesting. The film becomes a chase movie, with Ronan's character and her father Eric Bana separated and due to rendez vous in Berlin, chased by Cate Blanchett's odd CIA dark spy.

The shooting was amazing though, lovely cinematography, lots of high key, and use of narrow depth of field. This was much more an art house film than a mainstream blockbuster. A strange conclusion...but very watchable.

Ronan will be a megastar if she chooses. Which is a shit, because Saoirse has always been one of my favourite names for a daughter, and it might end up going all Demi/Kylie.
